Put them on the block?

Knocking on Heaven's Door

Bloody conflicts galore and the lure of more prosperous lives have combined to swell the numbers of people seeking political asylum or refugee status in the EU. The EU is not coping. CESifo researcher Hillel Rapoport and a colleague propose an economically flawless but politically wonderfully incorrect solution.

Some Are More Equal than Others

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has just declared that France, Italy and Belgium will not be subject to sanctions for breaking EU budget rules. This highlights a fundamental flaw in the structure of the European Monetary Union, according to Hans-Werner Sinn, a flaw that must be corrected before it is too late.

The Greatest Socio-economic Experiment Ever

It is not often that you get a chance to perform a "live" natural experiment with human subjects. The effects of chemical substances or genetical experiments come to mind. In economics, however, socio-economic experiments do work out sometimes—but never at the scale that Germany managed once. It has just celebrated 25 years since the experiment ended.

Heading for the Sunset

We are living longer but not retiring later. A delightful prospect, if you can afford it. The thing is, no one knows just how to finance this, nor how to convince people to work longer. A new DICE interactive chart shows what the situation around Europe is when it comes to pensionable age and life expectancy. Anything but a romantic sunset.

CESifo Economic Studies

If all Swedish voters had been equally well-informed, the left-wing parties would have received between 3 and 4 percent fewer votes. That's one of the findings of an open-access study in the latest issue of CESifo Economic Studies, which will hit the bookshelves on December 4. There is plenty more in that issue, and it is already available online.

Kenneth Rogoff

Money No Object

Money is a great invention. There is something to having a wad of bills to count—and no mattress will assure you a better night's sleep than one stuffed with them. And yet Kenneth Rogoff, of Harvard University, says we should actually abolish paper money. Sounds outlandish, but the newly-minted Distinguished CES Fellow may be on to something.
