Privacy Policy and Data Protection

Data protection statement

The Ifo Institute has accumulated an enormous wealth of data and acquired extensive experience in handling sensitive data thanks particularly to the company surveys it has carried out for decades. High standards in terms of data protection and security are met whenever handling personal data, be this in relation to surveys conducted by post, online surveys or orders placed online via the CESIfo Group’s internet portal.

Personal data is only stored on our website and in our databases to the extent that is necessary. Such data is treated as strictly confidential. Legal data protection requirements are fully complied with at all times.

The following statement offers an overview of how protection is guaranteed, the type of data collected and the purpose for which such data is stored.

Personal data

It is not basically necessary to provide personal data in order to use our website and databases. In certain cases, however, we do request our users’ name, address and additional information to enable us to provide the service requested. We only store and process data made available to us voluntarily or automatically.

When you access the websites and databases of the CESifo Group our webserver processes and stores the traffic data that is standardly transmitted from your browser. Such data includes, for example, the IP address, date, time, access method/status and name of the file accessed. This data is used by CESifo Group staff exclusively for their own statistical purposes, it is assessed anonymously and is subsequently deleted.

Additional personal data such as your name, address, telephone number or email address is only collected if you give us this information e.g. in the context of registering, signing up for one of our events or by placing an order. We exclusively use this information to process your orders or registrations. Whenever you use the ordering function on our website, you must agree to the storage and use of your data for this purpose (General Business Conditions).

Your personal data is not forwarded to a third party unless this is required in order to handle the contract. This applies, for example, to service partners who require information to complete an order (for example, the shipping company contracted to deliver the product and the credit institution responsible for handling payment). In these cases the scope of the data transmitted is limited to the bare minimum required to complete the order.

Other forms of personal data are collected from participants in our company surveys like, for example, company data and the participant’s responses. The Ifo Institute stores and processes this data exclusively to produce survey results (like the results of the Ifo Business Climate Index, for instance) and for research purposes. The survey data collected are not passed on to third parties. They are merely published in an aggregate form as average values for individual branches and sectors without any naming of the company or corporate department surveyed that has provided the data.

Security

A technically mature security system is used to transmit and store all customer-related information gathered for online orders. Secure Sockets Layer technology (SSL) is used to encode all of your personal data, including your order information. The data that you input is transformed into a code that can be securely transmitted via the internet. If you work with a security enabled browser, your order data cannot be read on the internet by any unauthorised persons. All of today’s widely used browsers support SSL.

The collection of articles that you wish to purchase in a shopping cart is not subject to SSL encoding. On registration (login) your personal information (like your billing address and dispatch wishes) are transmitted on an encoded basis. New inputs or changes are safely transmitted to the server only if you trigger this process by pressing a button to this end. If you wish to modify the contents of your shopping basket at a later point in time by adding or taking out articles, for example, then data transmission is not secure. Your personal data are not combined with the shopping cart until you wish to continue with your order and identify yourself once again.

Survey participation is also encoded with SSL. This applies both to the registration of and the transmission and storage of survey responses. Our software does not store any information permanently on your computer’s hard disk. To control the interface, however, it is necessary to set a cookie that is deleted once your visit is over.

Website and database control

The websites and databases of the CESifo Group can be accessed using popular browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera). Cookies and JavaScript must be activated in order to exploit the full functionality of our websites and databases. Cookies are small text files that are stored on your computer and by your browser. Most of the cookies that we use are so-called “session cookies” and are automatically deleted once you leave our website or database. The transmission of login information, order information and questionnaires for our online surveys is protected via SSL. Cookies, JavaScript and SSL must be activated to this end.

Right of access

We can provide information on your personal data that we are holding (e.g. your name and address) at your written request.
