This recent CESifo Working Paper by ifo researcher Andreas Peichl and his co-author Johannes Hermle presents a useful tool to evaluate the optimal level of taxes when different types of income or spouses in couples are taxed differently. Economists Panel: German Economists Take Sceptical View of Pension Policy
The majority of German economists oppose the pension policy pursued by Germany’s grand coalition between the Christian Democrats and the Social Democrats, according to the latest Economists Panel conducted by the ifo Institute and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. The fundamental attitude underlying many responses is that the grand coalition is making a lot of promises to Germany’s ageing population that will be difficult to keep financially and are burdening younger and future generations. ifo Business Climate Index Falls
Sentiment among German firms weakened further this month. The ifo Business Climate Index fell to 102.8 points in October from 103.7 points in September. Firms were less satisfied with their current business situation and less optimistic about the months ahead. Growing global uncertainty is increasingly taking its toll on the German economy.

CESifo Forum 3/2018: Unconditional Basic Income
The latest issue of CESifo Forum looks at unconditional basic income, or a state-funded security net that guarantees every citizen a long-term, subsistence level welfare benefit. Its articles discuss the concept from the viewpoint of various European countries which, like Finland, have either already implemented such a benefit, or are currently discussing concrete plans to do so.  3rd Doctoral Workshop on the Economics of Digitization
At this 2-day international workshop doctoral students involved in research in the field of the Economics of Digitalization with both a theoretical and empirical focus will gather to exchange views in Louvain-la-Neuve.  Conference on Skilled Migration and Labor Shortage in Non-Metropolitan Areas
The Chairs of Economic Geography and of Economics/Public Finance of the University of Jena will host a conference on “Skilled Migration and Labor Shortages in Non-Metropolitan Areas” on March 25 and 26, 2019 in Jena, Germany. The conference seeks to bring together researchers from the fields of economics, geography and related disciplines for presentations and discussions about current research. The conference is part of the HiTh project on the migration of international students and highly-skilled workers to overcome regional labor shortages. Alessandra Faggian from the Gran Sasso Science Institute in L’Aquila, Italy will give the keynote lecture. The deadline for the submission of full papers or extended abstracts is 15 December 2018.
