More Immigrants – More Extreme Voting?
In recent decades immigration has become one of the main dividing lines in many Western countries. CESifo network member Panu Poutvaara and his co-authors Anthony Edo, Yvonne Giesing and Jonathan Öztunc study how immigration is related to voting for far left and far right candidates in French presidential elections from 1988 to 2017. ifo Institute Warns of EU Tariffs for Third Countries
Gabriel Felbermayr, Director of the ifo Center for International Economics, makes a plea against punitive tariffs for third parties as a response to the US announcement of tariffs on steel and aluminium. Instead, the EU government needs to ensure that all other WTO members jointly call for compliance with WTO rules to limit trade policy conflict. Find out more about his views on protectionist measures.
ECONOMIC INDICATORS
ifo Business Climate Index Falls
Strong sentiment among German businesses weakened slightly this month. The ifo Business Climate Index fell to 114.7 points in March from 115.4 points in February. Companies were slightly less satisfied with their current business situation, which nevertheless remained at a high level. They were also less optimistic about the months ahead. The threat of protectionism is dampening the mood in the German economy.
