The Case for Capital Controls

A drought lasting many years. The neighbours, grudgingly, have been topping up the tank. But they now appear fed up and, worse, the tank suddenly starts to leak what little is left at an alarming rate. What to do? Well, for starters, plug the leaks. That's the case for capital controls in Greece, argues Hans-Werner Sinn.

Just don't look down now

Ifo Index Still Buoyant

The Ifo Business Climate Index is still on the rise, hitting its highest level since July 2014. Polled companies expressed both satisfaction with the current business situation as well as healthy optimism about the outlook. The only minor quibble: the construction boom is still there, but weakening a bit.

The Parable of the Down-at-Heel and his Stingy Neighbours

It was so good while it lasted. Now, why won't the neighbours see the dire need, the scraping of the bottom of the barrel, and open up their wallets a bit more? Why, indeed.

Confidence in the Police

Yes, yes, it is not an oxymoron. There are countries where people actually trust those guys in uniform patrolling the streets. They even find them quite useful. But there are also those places where when you see the police approaching you clutch your wallet and your watch tightly. Check out this Visual Story of the DICE database to see how the police is seen around the world, and how the views have evolved over time.

Bridging the gap

The Determinants of Gender Gaps

Different outcomes in the labour market do not reflect solely differences in abilities, but also in gender. This so-called gender gap has no unique determinant. As this special volume of CESifo Economic Studies shows, it is a multidimensional, complex issue. For instance, have men evolved to be innately more risk-taking than women, or have they become that way in part through cultural pressures? A dozen contributions look at the gender issue from angles ranging from the historical to the entrepreneurial.

Computers Good and Bad for Teaching

Using computers in the classroom leads to no improvement in the overall outcomes of math and science students, but averaging the results masks the fact that the use of computers has opposing effects in different areas, as an Ifo Institute study has found. The study covers the math and science achievements of over 400,000 4th and 8th-grade students from over 50 countries using data from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).
