Martina Viarengo, CESifo guest
in July 2013

Martina Viarengo

What practices and policies of law firms have contributed to the gender gaps among professionals in the legal sector? To what extent are these practices and policies found in other professional settings? What differences are there across countries? These are the questions that Martina Viarengo will be investigating during her stay at CESifo. Her hope is that the insights gained from the study can assist policymakers in identifying the practices and behaviour that are associated with greater gender equality in the professional sectors.

Ms Viarengo is a specialist in applied microeconomics and development. Her research focuses on comparative education policy, gender, and international migration. In trying to better understand how to reduce poverty and inequality, she has examined education policy, gender gaps and labour market outcomes in the OECD and developing countries.

Martina Viarengo, who stayed at CESifo from 1 to 7 July 2013, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies of Geneva. Prior to joining the Graduate Institute's Faculty, Ms Viarengo was an Economist at the Centre for Economic Performance of the London School of Economics and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government. In 2013 Ms. Viarengo was selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. She holds a PhD from the London School of Economics and a Master’s Degree from Northwestern University.
