Christian Bjørnskov, CESifo guest
in May/June 2013

Christian Bjørnskov

Are labour unions more likely to strike if a government leans to the right or to the left? How might changes in income inequality affect the likely occurrence and severity of strikes? During his stay at CESifo, Christian Bjørnskov, along with Niklas Potrafke, will be investigating these questions in a study of strike activity in the OECD since the mid-1980s. The project takes its starting point in the major differences in strike activity and economic costs of strikes and lockouts that can observed across time and countries.

Christian Bjørnskov’s long publication list includes papers that have addressed these questions: “The Size and Scope of Government in the US States. Does Political Ideology Matter?”, “Are Debt Repayment Incentives Undermined by Foreign Aid?”, “Is Trust the Missing Root of Institutions, Education, and Development?”, “Is Social Capital a Good Concept?”, “Does Social Trust Determine the Size of the Welfare State?”, “Does Religiosity Promote Property Rights and the Rule of Law?”, “Can Bribes Buy Protection Against International Competition?”, “How Does Social Trust Affect Economic Growth?”

Mr Bjørnskov holds a PhD in economics from the Aarhus School of Business and is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Economics, Aarhus University. In addition to refereeing for numerous journals, he is a member of the Editorial Board of Public Choice and the European Journal of Political Economy. From 2007 to 2010 he was a member of the Executive Board of the European Public Choice Society.
