CESifo Researchers Win Award

CESifo Research Director Rahel Aichele and the Director of the Ifo Centre for International Economics, Gabriel Felbermayr were granted the Ralph C. d’Arge and Allen V. Kneese Award for Outstanding Publication in the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management for their paper "Kyoto and the Carbon Footprint of Nations".

The award is granted annually by the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (AERE), in recognition for an outstanding research paper published in the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, the world’s leading journal in the field of environmental economics.

The awarding committee explains why it distinguished this paper:

“The committee decided to name this paper for a variety of reasons. The question of carbon leakage is critical for understanding the performance of partial participation climate agreements, and this paper convincingly demonstrates how reductions in domestic carbon emissions from the Kyoto agreement are more than offset by increases in carbon emissions embodied in imports from the rest of the world. The importance of the question, quality of the data assemblage, care in estimation, and robustness of the findings distinguished this paper from among several top contenders.
We expect the paper will also have significant pedagogical value in that three recent readers reported plans to use it in their lectures. As such, the paper will be a durable contribution to both our understanding of climate policy and the training of future applied researchers.”
