And I just wanted to help...

Why, Oh Why?

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. If the US retreats inward, it will be blamed for not doing enough to police the world's troublesome spots. If it does intervene abroad, it will be blasted for being a bully. And yet, the US foreign policy is not the only thing feeding the loathing behind anti-Americanism. A far more benign development also plays a role, as new CESifo research shows.

Rickety Piketty

It sure sounds like he may be onto something: Piketty's nifty r > g formula has all the simple elegance of Einstein's e = mc2. But is it really a new insight? And is his interpretation of the implications correct? Check out what Hans-Werner Sinn has to say about it.

Still Heading south

Ifo Business Climate Index Weakens Further

Well, nobody's perfect. The hitherto unassailable German economy is at last really feeling the chill: the Ifo Business Climate Index fell for the fourth month in a row in August. From ebola to hizbollah, from invasion to deflation and the demonic hate of Islamic State, there seems to be no respite. Small wonder that assessments of the current business situation fell less favourably and optimism about future business developments less bubbly.

There are few things in the world worse than DHMO, a terrible substance, to judge by its fact sheet. Fracking may come close in evilness — at least in German eyes. The similarity in the vileness standing of DHMO and fracking may be not such a bad thing, though.

Right and Proper

History has shown that no modern economy can do without solid protection of individual property rights. Some countries, however, seem to think the rule does not apply to them, as a new DICE interactive chart shows. Check it out.

German Firms Still Willing to Hire Despite Geopolitical Crises

Despite the geopolitical tension, German companies’ willingness to hire has strengthened. The Ifo Employment Barometer for Germany rose in August, the main driver being the service sector, which is mainly domestically oriented and thus less affected by global political events.
