Season's Greetings
An exciting and eventful year is drawing to a close and the festive season swiftly approaches. The CESifo Group would like to take this opportunity to review some of the year’s highlights and look ahead to forthcoming events in 2017. We would also like to wish our readers a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

Featured Paper
2016 was not only a year of change for the CESifo Group, but also for this newsletter. Its former editor Julio Saavedra left CESifo to become Advisor to TTU, Diwan of Royal Court of the Sultanate of Oman. We would like to thank Julio for his excellent work over the years and wish him all the best for the future. It was Julio’s idea to feature one of the latest CESifo Working Papers in this newsletter. This year’s features covered a broad range of topics including an evaluation of minimum wages, a lab experiment killing mice and a paper on optimal tests for fatal diseases. Bearing in mind Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, studying the effects of internet access on voting behaviour in the web 2.0 era gives particularly astonishing insights into democratic processes today. Check out all of the 2016 featured papers here!

A Fuestian Bargain
Despite a major change at the top this year, with Clemens Fuest taking over from Hans-Werner Sinn as Ifo President, there was little change to the key issues covered by this section. The future of the European Union constitutes the focal point of 2016’s contributions, which range from proposing a common European army to EU budget recommendations and, of course, analysis of the UK’s Brexit vote. In addition to the EU’s problems, Clemens Fuest also looks at the implications of last month’s US presidential election. An extensive list of all Ifo Viewpoints is available here.

More from and about Clemens Fuest

Economic Indicators
The business climate in Germany ended the year stronger than it started 2016. Despite the Brexit vote and the election of Donald Trump, sentiment in the German economy improved over the course of the year. This is particularly astonishing since 2016 did not get off to a particularly auspicious start and political events across the globe did little to boost the German economy. After dropping to its lowest point of the year in February, the index rose steadily, hitting its annual peak in December. The German economy is in a festive mood – so why not join in the high spirits!

Publication of Interest

CESifo published several papers and journals in 2016. By far the largest amount of research output was generated by our network members who submitted and published around 600 CESifo Working Papers, 10 of which featured in this newsletter. Peer-reviewed studies were published in 4 issues of CESifo Economic Studies, including a special issue on Empirical Family Economics and on a Fiscal Union in the Eurozone. The CESifo DICE Report, CESifo World Economic Survey and CESifo Forum offer quarterly reports on scientific research within the CESifo Group. We will be keeping up the good work next year– so watch out for CESifo’s publications in 2017!

Events Review 2016

2016 was a momentous year that included highlights such as the official ceremony to mark Hans-Werner Sinn’s retirement and the 25th Anniversary of the Center for Economic Studies, Kai Konrad giving the Richard Musgrave Lecture and Nobel Prize winner Bengt Holstrom delivering the Munich Lecture in Economics. Visit our media library for on-demand videos of many of CESifo’s events.

Events Outlook 2017

Looking ahead, 2017 awaits us with some exciting innovations. Prior to the IIPF Annual Congress, CESifo is hosting the IIPF Doctoral School in Munich to provide a forum for young researchers to meet and discuss their research in the field of public finance. In cooperation with other European universities, CESifo is also offering its first doctoral workshop on the Economics of Digitalisation in May. In general, digitalisation is becoming increasingly prominent in CESifo’s activities. As a result, a new “Economics of Digitalisation” Research Network Area will be set up to foster the exchange of knowledge in this thriving field of research.
