Worse Than Expected, Better Than Assumed: The Economic Situation in East Germany 30 Years After the Fall of the Berlin Wall

Even 30 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, there is still widespread dissatisfaction with the state of reconstruction in the East. In fact, the situation in many areas is far better than the general mood: real disposable incomes are 92% of the West German level, and the job market situation is only slightly worse than there. Most East Germans are also satisfied with their personal economic situation - but at the same time feel disadvantaged compared to their compatriots in the West. The article looks for the reasons for this and draws conclusions on future economic policy in and for the East German Länder.
