In the ifo/FAZ Economists Panel survey of February 2017, economics professors at German universities were asked about their expectations for the forthcoming Brexit negotiations as well as the future trade policy of the EU and the United Kingdom. The majority of the surveyed respondents believe that the EU in future will cooperate with the United Kingdom primarily on the basis of a bilateral treaty, but as a future model they favour the UK's membership in the European Economic Area. At the same time, the majority of economists expect EU trade policy will become more protectionist in the future.
