Survey Series

In order to increase the visibility of solo self-employed and micro enterprises, the ifo Institute has been publishing a new indicator since December 2021: the Jimdo-ifo Business Climate Index for the Self-Employed, which is based on the ifo Business Surveys. Similar to the overall index, all sectors are taken into account, with a focus on the service sector. To attract new participants, we are working on this business climate index in cooperation with Jimdo, a provider of online tools for solo self-employed and small businesses, and the Association of Founders and Self-Employed People of Germany (VGSD e.V.).

The GAME-LIGHTS database is a grid cell-level database covering a rich collection of variables for all counties worldwide from 1992 to 2013. The dataset collects information on meteorological events from primary information and translates them into weather anomalies on a 0.5° x 0.5° cell-level basis. GAME-LIGHTS covers storms, extreme temperature events, torrential rain and droughts on a yearly basis. It also adds information on night-time light emissions data and population data on the grid cell level.

The data provide a unique dataset for economic analysis as it contains variation which is presumably exogenous to economic outcomes. The service of GAME-LIGHTS is to provide the data in a structured way.

With its business surveys the ifo Institute collects data that are of great interest for empirical economic research both in Germany and abroad. The extensive data stocks of the ifo Institute's business surveys are available as aggregated results.

We keep moving – in 2022, a lot happened at the ifo Institute. Our data center is now independent, our researchers received awards, they helped shape debates through offices, and some of our committees were re-staffed. And the Gender Task Force also developed ideas that are already having an impact.

Our goal is to help shape the economic debate. That is why we are looking for female and male economists who want to achieve research excellence. We will help you reach your goals by providing excellent research conditions plus graduate schools and collaborations with Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, TU Dresden, and Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. In addition, we offer a mentoring program for female economists, and our CESifo network, which gives you access to international researchers from all over the world. You can also further your career outside of research – because we systematically support the professional development of our staff through workshops, seminars, and further training.

The ifo Institute invites you to participate in the discussion of interesting economic topics via the Internet. In our ifo Media Center a whole series of remarkable events are available and can be viewed in full length. We also record selected speeches and presentations given by employees or at events and make them available in our Media Center.

The strength of the ifo Institute's scientific achievements is also reflected in its success in the scientific competition for research grants. The research grants acquired in the scientific competition have a double effect for the ifo Institute: on the one hand, they increase the scope for research, and on the other hand, they make it possible to work on fundamental policy-oriented issues and thus improve the basis for policy advice by the ifo Institute.

CESifo on-site conferences will resume as of May 2022.

The ifo Geological and Meteorological Events (GAME) database is a country-level database covering a rich collection of variables for all countries worldwide from 1979 to 2010.

Economic forecasts estimate how the economy will develop in the future. They focus on speed changes and turning points in key macroeconomic variables. This information helps companies and private households to make decisions on their investment and spending plans. The government also uses economic forecasts to adjust its policy instruments.
