Can Financial Incentives Reduce the Baby Gap? Evidence from a Reform in Maternity Leave Benefits
The gap in fertility between high and low-educated women is a major challenge for policymakers in many developed countries. High opportunity costs have been identified as the main obstacle for well-educated women to having children. In her recent CESifo Working Paper Anna Raute analyses whether the change from flat to earnings-related parental leave benefits helps to reduce opportunity cost and thereby narrows the baby gap. A summary and the working paper in full are available online.

CLEMENS FUEST: VIEWPOINT
Populist Blackmail and the EU
Clemens Fuest argues in his recent Viewpoint that EU countries should no longer use the threat of growing support for populist parties to justifying violating European rules. Rewarding those who manage to refrain from shoplifting rather than punishing theft is not the right way for the EU to proceed.
