The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Horst Köhler, acknowledged the contribution of the Ifo Institute to economic research during his visit on 5th August 2008.
He thanked the Ifo researchers for their work and encouraged them to retain their inquisitiveness and also to be courageous in presenting their economic findings to a broader public. The President stressed that his visit should be regarded as a sign of recognition for the work of the Institute.
With Ifo President Hans-Werner Sinn and Ifo researchers, President Köhler discussed the economic outlook for German and the international economy. He confirmed that during his term as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund that he and his staff worked with materials of the Ifo Institute: “The Ifo Institute is well-known at the IMF”, Köhler pointed out.
The President encouraged Ifo staff to continue to participate in the public discussion of economic issues.
President Köhler was accompanied by his wife, Eva Luise Köhler, and the Bavarian Minister of Justice Beate Merk.
