The Ifo library is an essential part of Ifo's Data and Information Centre. It offers its services to internal as well as external users. With about 134,000 books and more than 1,500 subscriptions to various journals, it is one of the largest libraries specialising in economic literature in southern Germany.

Contents analysis is made by indexing according to Standard Thesaurus Economics, PTS country codes and a classification system. On 1 October 1999 the JEL (Journal of Economic Literature) classification system was introduced (in English).
