The goal of this study is to examine the consequences of EU enlargement and the free movement of labour on Germany. To estimate the migration potential after EU enlargement, econometric-based simulation models are used for the four most heavily populated accession countries.
This study was conducted by the department Social Policy and Labour Markets and completed in December 2000. It was commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Labour and Social Affairs. The Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Social Law examined the European legal aspects involved.
Summary The Ifo Institute for Economic Research and the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Social Law were commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Labour and Social Affairs to analyse the impact of an opening of the German labour market to workers from the major accession countries. The goal of this study is to examine the consequenses of EU enlargement and the free movement of labour from a German perspective and to make policy recommendations for the convergence of labour markets and the conditions of integration.
