The map shows that patent applications in Germany are not distributed evenly across the country. The number of international patent applications in the year 2008 reached from two in the least active region, to 1,437 in the most active region, namely the area around Stuttgart. This latter number equals approximately the number of applications in Finland. Further beacons of innovation in Germany are Munich, the Frankfurt Rhine-Main area, Düsseldorf, Central Frankonia and Berlin.
