The number of international patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) doubled between 1998 and 2008. The graph shows that by far the most applications are made in the US. Although Germany is ranked fairly well, its number of patent applications did not grow much in recent years which allowed Japan to become the country with the second most applications. China was able to overtake both France and the UK and is now ranked number four, right behind Germany.
