The Statistical Office of the Free State of Saxony assumes in its fourth regional population forecast a large decline of the Saxony population. The proposed development based on the year 2005 is pictured in the figure. According to this the population will decline between the year 2005 and 2020 by 7 %. The Federal Statistical Office Germany expects in a medium variant of its eleventh coordinated population forecast a decrease (-2,7 %) for the German population. After the year 2020 also the German population will shrink even stronger. The population in employable age (i. e. the population aged 15 to 65 years) is a better indicator for labour market considerations. The expected decline is much larger for the population in embloyable age in Saxony than for the population as a whole. The decline until 2020 will amount approximately 17 %.
