Information used for this figure is taken from the “Sozialbudget” (Welfare budget), an official reporting framework of the German government that is meant to cover all types of welfare expenditure (by type of funding, institutions, specific goals pursued, etc.) to monitor the structure and total level of spending across all branches of the German welfare state. Separate data for East and West Germany is only available until 2003. A full version of the Sozialbudget is published only once per election period.
