The Ifo Business Survey in the Services Sector, whose results are published as of October 2005, is the most comprehensive monthly survey in the services sector in Germany. The Business Climate Indicator for the Services is based on ca. 2,500 monthly responses from companies, especially from business-oriented segments of the tertiary sector (excl. distribution and government). Financial services are not included in the indicator since the Ifo Institute has separate surveys in this field.
For the calculation and extrapolation of the services indicator, information on turnover, employment, service segment and structural data of the official statistics are employed. The survey is conducted and calculated analogously to the Ifo Business Survey in industry and trade so that the results of different economic sectors can be compared with each other.
In such a comparison it must be kept in mind, however, that the results of the Business Survey in the services are not yet seasonally adjusted. For methodological reasons, seasonal adjustment is not made until a sufficiently long observation period exists. For this reason, the Ifo Business Climate Indicator for the services is not yet integrated into the Ifo results for industry and trade.
The Ifo Business Survey in the services meets the current EU standards for harmonised business surveys.
