I have spent a most wonderful fortnight at Ifo and in Munich. The research environment has been both stimulating and friendly and the work that is being done on topics in international trade under the leadership of Professor Felbermayr is impressive and state of the art. I should like to thank Dr Erdal Yalcin for hosting my visit and for sharing his time with me so generously. The academic environment has been matched by the well thought-out arrangements made by Katja. My wife and I have found the apartment very comfortable and convenient and the bicycles provided have been a great way to enjoy the local scenery. It is a great privilege to have been here and we have thoroughly enjoyed having had the opportunity to explore Munich, its history and culture. Many thanks! Donald MacLaren University of Melbourne April/May 2012
Thanks to Ifo for this very productive week. Danke! Farid Toubal 25.04.2012

Es ist immer wieder schön am ifo zu sein. Vielen Dank für die Gastfreundschaft. Ein besonderer Dank geht an Gabriel Felbermayr und sein Team! Benjamin Jung Universität Tübingen 20. Januar 2012
It seems like these two weeks have gone in the blink of an eye. The organisation and friendliness of the staff made sure that I could focus on my work, while the numerous workshops and seminars provided me with new inspiration. Going through this little book, it seems that everyone shared my experience: CESifo is a wonderful and stimulating place. Thanks to all, Vielen Dank! Julien Prat 10.11.2011
Last year I visited CES and this year Ifo. Both visits have been very enjoyable and productive. Last year I finished 3 papers that were published this year. And at Ifo in October 2011 I have written up and revised three papers again, which I hope will be published next year. I really enjoyed the hospitality of the Ifo institute and I am very impressed by the efficiency in the administration here. Thank you all, in particular Katja for taking care of everything. Grazie mille, Steinar Strøm University of Turin
It feels as if I just arrived yesterday, but 2 weeks were actually gone. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Gabriel and Mario for inviting me, Katja for the kind assistance to my visit and Alex for taking care of me, and of course, the Ifo Institute for the warm hospitality. The discussions with Gabriel, Mario, Beno and other young researchers here are very thought provoking and it has definitely been a productive and fantastic 10 days for me. Of course it was amazing to see the Oktoberfest and I like beers, the largest glass of beer I have ever tried in my life! I look so much forward to future visits. Besten Dank! Zhihong Yu University of Nottingham
Many thanks for a very enjoyable and productive visit. I have been incredibly impressed by the serious research done here on business cycle analysis, and have learned a lot from the fresh perspective of the research group here. Thanks also for the wonderful hospitality. Mike Elsby University of Edinburgh
This was my first visit to Ifo & it was wonderful. I very much appreciated the opportunity to come and focus on research. The accommodations (the cute apartment on the 4th floor) were perfect, as was Ifo's hospitality. My wife and oldest son were also able to come with me and they took advantage of all Bavaria has to offer. Perhaps most importantly, I very much valued the opportunity to develop new friendships at Ifo that may lead to new research activity in the future. Thank you! Mark Skidmore (& Kate & Jack) Michigan State University
It was wonderful as always to benefit from Ifo's hospitality. It was a productive 3-week stretch for me, and my family truly made the most of their time in Munich. Thanks for everything - and we hope to visit again soon! Martin West (& Grace, Quinn, and Sam) Harvard University
This was also my first visit to Ifo and I was very much impressed by the hospitality and perfect organisation of the staff. Special thanks to Katja and Gabriel! I had a wonderful and very productive stay here. The conditions could not be better. I look forward to a future cooperation between Ifo and CEPII. I am confident it will be fruitful. Thanks again to all of you. Agnès Bénassy-Quéré 15 July 2011
The fist visit to Ifo has been among the most productive ones I have ever made to any research institution. The environment and location are perfect to get you focused and do a lot of work. Looking forward to future visits, Eugenio J. Miravete University of Texas at Austin
An extremely pleasant and productive stay at the Ifo Institute is ending - much too early. I enjoyed the inspiring intellectual atmosphere and the hospitality. I return back home with many new ideas. Collaboration with the energy-and-resources department, particularly with Karen Pittel, was excellent and enjoyable. On top of everything Ifo has bikes for its visitors. Oh, what a service! Thank you for everything. Michael Rauscher Universität Rostock 29 June 2011
My visit at the Ifo institute was extremely productive and pleasant. The Guest apartment on the institute premises is very convenient and comfortable. And the intellectual environment is just outstanding. While at the institute, I started work on a couple of projects with Prof. Gabriel Felbermayr of the Ifo institute (and LMU). Both projects look promising. I look forward to a long-lasting relationship with Ifo. I thank everyone for their hospitality. Devashish Mitra Syracuse University May 24, 2011
An excellent and productive visit. Many Thanks to Ifo for being so accomodating. They even arranged for good weather! Danke. C.Ellis University of Oregon
I enjoyed my time at the Ifo Institute very much! Thank you the opportunity to visit Ifo, to get the chance to look inside the mechanics of the Ifo business climate survey, and great organisation. The five weeks have been very productive. Especially I want to thank Kai Carstensen and Klaus Wohlrabe for the invitation and stimulating discussions. We have started two projects and more might come. A special "thank you" also to Katja Gramann and the staff of the reception desk for their friendly help with my everyday questions and needs. I am looking forward to some visit in the Future! Danke! Georg Strasser Boston College April 2011

I am very grateful that I got the opportunity to visit Ifo in March 2011. These two weeks were both highly productive and enjoyable. The research environment is very stimulating, the generous hospitality outstanding, the organisation perfect, and accommodation of office facilities splendid. In particular, I wish to thank Katja Gramann for arranging in such an effective and friendly way and Panu Poutvaara (International Institutional Comparisons) for his invitation and fruitful research cooperation. I will certainly remember these weeks which flew by so fast. Many thanks and best wishes, Andreas Wagener University of Hannover March 2011
My stay at CESifo was very productive on many fronts. First, I got to meet and exchange with fascinating senior and junior researchers. Second, I also got the opportunity to focus on my ongoing research. Katja and Marc made my stay very smooth at the logistical and academic level. I look forward to contribute actively to the CESifo network! Rabah Arezki
It has been a pleasant - and productive! - visit, the two weeks have gone by so fast, thanks to perfect organisation, tremendous friendliness and the very stimulating discussions! Many thanks and all the best, Renè Renè Böheim JKU Linz 18-02-2011
Thank you for kindly hosting me for 5 whole months! The Ifo provides everything needed for a fruitful and enjoyable research stay: a quiet environment to write, stimulating discussions with Ifo researchers & faculty as well as the wonderful "secret capitol" München as a backdrop. My family and I will never forget our time spent here. Best wishes and many thanks, Maximilian Auffhammer Jan. 27, 2011
This week has gone too fast! CESifo is a wonderful and stimulating place for research in economics. The visiting fellowship has allowed me to research, interact with some of the best people in our profession and to exchange and confront ideas. This is especially made possible thanks to the great facilities and thanks to the perfect organisation. Special thanks to Katja and Alex for having been wonderful and efficient hosts. Thank you. 19.11.2010 G.Nicodème
I found an extremely dynamic research environment at CESifo, where international researchers meet and emotionally discuss ideas. My special thanks to Marc, Janina and Katja for making my stay at CESifo simply unforgettable. Grazie Luca, Oct 25, 2010
I've really appreciated the generous hospitality, splendid facilities and accommodation, and impressive organisation of the guest programme at CESifo. Members of the Social Policy and Labour Markets group were very friendly and welcoming and fine lunchtime dining companions. Special thanks to Christian Holzner for working until 10pm to await my arrival and to Katja Gramann for fixing the office window I almost destroyed. Helmut Rainer is an exceptional and attentive host and I'm delighted with the progress we have made on our joint paper. I'm also pleased to have brought some fine Scottish weather with me for the Bewohner of Munich to enjoy. Ian Smith August 2010
Two weeks gone already? Much too fast. Would anyone mind if I quietly stayed here forever? I can't imagine a better place to take stock, learn and write - leaving, unfortunately, no excuses for failing to come up with great work. I'm not sure which is the more impressive: the efficiency and commitment of all at CESifo, or their friendliness. But I shall certainly remember both. All my thanks, and my highest regards, Mick Michael Keen July 2010
This has been a great visit. I have learned and met some fantastic people for a lifetime. My research will be greatly enhanced because of my time here. You have all been so nice. This place is a well-run machine and I can't express my gratitude enough. Thank you. Gary Hoover Uni Alabama, 15 July 2010
Juni 2010
I visited the CESifo institute in June 2010 and tremendously enjoyed the inspiring discussions with the researchers here on a wide range of topics, from location choice, redundancy pay, hold-up problems, trust and competition, and much, much more. CESifo is really a stimulating place. Thank you very much for the opportunity to visit CESifo under such splendid circumstances. Oliver Kirchkamp Uni Jena, 11.06.2010
I have spent a wonderful and exciting time in the Ifo Institute. This month has gone very quickly and has been full of stimulating discussions from which surely there is scope for further collaboration. Many thanks for this opportunity. Many thanks also to the administrative staff and in particular Katja Gramann. I hope to be back! April 30th 2010 Carlos Carrillo-Tudela
I have always been impressed by Ifo's contribution to Economics in terms of both the depth and the range of the work done, but also in terms of the very active engagement with policy issues. So it was great to experience this charged intellectual atmosphere at first hand through active engagement on two current areas of interest - competition policy and household economics. But I greatly enjoyed the warmth and friendliness of the colleagues and the superb administrative arrangements. Of course Munich and its surrounding areas are incredible places to visit - visually beatiful und culturally and gastronomically rich. Hope to be back. David Ulph School of Economics and Finance University of St Andrews, Scotland
Thank you very much for the opportunity to visit the Ifo Institute. These two weeks were very productive and we had several stimulating discussions. I am looking forward to come back again. Leo Kaas 16 April 2010
Besten Dank für die effiziente Organisation und dies sehr anregenden wissenschaftlichen Diskussionen. Hier ist man sehr gerne Gast! Michael Lechner 29. Januar 2010
Thank you very much for the opportunity to visit Ifo. My stay this week was a wonderful experience, very productive and a chance to meet and interact with many researchers. I would like to thank particularly Guido Schwerdt at the department of Human Capital and Innovation for his great hospitality and the very exciting discussions we had for a number of issues, which eventually will be the base of a number of projects to be carried out in future. Many thanks also to Katja Gramann for arranging all the details of my visit and all the people in the building for their hospitality during lunches and coffee breaks. With my best wishes, Konstantinos Tatsiramos IZA, Bonn November 29, 2009
I have been at CESifo since October 20th. It has been four very productive weeks. I had time for research, given seminars and participated in conferences. The office and the apartment offered good working and living conditions. Jogging along the Isar and in the English Garden was good exercise, and counteracted the effect of the tasty German beer. Special thanks to Thiess (hopefully our project will be a success) and to Katja and her colleagues for excellent help with practicalities. Lars-Erik Borge, Norwegian University of Science and Technology November 18, 2009
I have been a visiting fellow in many organisations but CESifo is clearly the best organisation and thought out - not just the simple things that can easily irritate such as accommodation, travel etc., but the core ones of research resources, interaction with colleagues, seminars and other opportunities for discussion. Everyone was very friendly, helpful and constructive. It has helped me complete two papers and develop co-authors for future efforts. I hope I will be allowed back so this relationship and its work can develop. I am most grateful to Dr Ochel for his suggestions I come and for what was organised. David Mayes, University of Auckland 8.10.2009
Prof. Dr Lee, Hun Dae Department of Economics, Kyonggi University August 21, 2009
We visited the Ifo Institute in August 2009 and found a great set-up all around, from offices over bikes to the apartment. Had interesting meetings with members of at least 3 different Ifo groups, especially some lunches with Mario Larch and two youngsters of the group, Benno Heid and Sebastian Benz. Thanks for an enjoyable stay and we are looking forward to future interactions. And our 3-year old thinks that ICE trains and the Munich public transportation system in general are terrific! Wolfgang Keller & Carol Shiue August 18, 2009
Thank you very much to everyone at Ifo for making our stay most enjoyable, productive, and intellectually stimulating. Ifo is a wonderful institution full of great people and we could not have asked for a better environment for our research. Add to that the other pleasures of a summer in Munich, from evenings in the various beer gardens to weekend trips into the Alps, and it becomes hard to imagine a more pleasant environment for a researcher. We are very much looking forward to future visits. Kalina Manova & Dirk Jenter Stanford University July 29, 2009
It is a great pleasure to be back "home". The Ifo apartment is a wonderful place to stay after a productive work day. Thanks to the CESifo, and Ifo staff for their great hospitality! Thanks to everyone at Ludger Woessmann's department of Human Capital and Innovation. It's a terrific group of researchers and it's a great pleasure to be part of the team!. Sascha Becker June 29,, 2009
Thanks for the warm welcome and stimulating environment. My stay at CESifo provided a variety of interesting experiences and an opportunity to broaden my perspective on developments in economic policy. I will look forward to future visits! Alan Auerbach June 5, 2009
Thanks to everyone at CESifo for making my stay most productive and enjoyable, without the willing and friendly availability of computer expertise my work in Europe would have come to a crashing halt. CESifo is devoted to assisting scholars in every way (from housing, to transportation, to interaction in workshops, to technical support). Most appreciated, Bill Becker Professor of Economics Indiana University-Bloomington April 21, 2009
Thank you for a very much for a fruitful and enjoyable visit! I can think of no better place to stay for doing research. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and I have had several stimulating and challenging discussions with the researchers at CESifo. Everything - and then I mean everything - is perfectly organized, and the working conditions are better than at any other places I have visited. Best regards Hans Jarle Kind
Thank you for a very enjoyable visit. It is always a pleasure to visit academically challenging places like the Ifo Institute. Throughout the two weeks that I stayed at Ifo, I particularly enjoyed the stimulating discussions I had with Thiess Buettner on a number of issues that we share common interest on. I am hopeful that these discussions will bear fruitful collaborations in the near future. Many thanks also to Christian Holzner for sharing his insights on matching models with me, and to Katja Gramann for taking such wonderful care of the organisation of my visit. Everything worked beautifully. They all did make me feel very welcome here. Additional treats for me have been the Distinguished CESifo Fellow lecture and the very interesting seminars organised by the CESifo. Many thanks again for the hospitality. With all my best wishes Christos Kotsogiannis
Many thanks for a stimulating and enjoyable visit, what not to like? Academically, the combination of CESifo and the university offered wonderful opportunities for new perspectives on the issues I have been working on - climate change, fiscal federalism, and infrastructure. Munich is a delightful city, culturally rich, naturally beautiful, satisfying in its culinary offerings, and well-located in terms of the Bavarian Alps. And, of course, the chance to experience the Oktober Fest was a treat. My wife and I also loved the little Ifo apartment - a convenient nest away from home. Peter Heller
I really enjoyed the hospitality of the Ifo Institute during my visit in September 2008. I was able to do a lot of work, and also enjoy Munich and its surroundings. Thanks! Michael Hoel
August 15, 2008 Many thanks for a wonderful visit! The research environment at CESifo is ideal - stimulating economics, friendly staff, beautiful facilities, and the luxury of unstructured time. It was just the setting I needed to advance my project on trade and labor markets. I also had the opportunity to chat with Peter Egger about a possible new project and, of course, to enjoy the many charms of Munich and surrounding areas. Thanks especially to Peter for the many things he did to make my visit productive and memorable. Jim Tybout Penn State University
August 4, 2008 My visit to the Ifo Institute has been very productive and enjoyable – thanks to my generous host Dr. Gernot Nerb and the friendly staff including Katja Gramann. The long hours of data snooping in front of a computer with my devoted assistant Dennis Dlugosch, operas and open air concerts in the evenings, punctuated by Weissbier at Hofbrauhaus in between, have made our Munich visit a memorable experience. We even managed to complete a paper. I am looking forward to a continued collaboration, and thank the Ifo Institute for its hospitality. Kajal Lahiri State University of New York, Albany
July 11, 2008 What a delightful visit this has been! I have been able to be very productive in work on several projects, and enjoyed many stimulating discussions. My work has advanced substantially and all in a wonderful environment. What more can an academic ask for? I also have plans to start on one or two new projects that arose through discussions here. I really thank Thiess for being a great host, Hans-Werner for his unusual hospitality and intellectual fever and Katja for the wonderful organization of my stay. Until next time, Tim Goodspeed Hunter College - CUNY New York, USA
June 27, 2008 It is always a joy to return to CESifo and Munich. The staff is friendly and very helpful. The research atmosphere is excellent and Munich is one of the best places in the world. While there is always a lot going on here it is possible to be productive. Its is an ideal place to visit. I hope to return soon to visit my many good friends here. Thank you very much. Raymond Riezman
May 21, 2008 My visit at CESifo has been exceptionally productive and enjoyable. While here, I attended three conferences, several seminars, had very productive interactions with many colleagues, wrote a paper (almost) with Volker Meier, my host. And last but not least, I made a considerable improvement in my fading skill of riding a bicycle. All of this is a testament to the excellent work environment CESifo set up for visitors and to its dedicated and effective staff. Special thanks to Katja Gramann for making it all work so well. Michael Kaganovich
May 19, 2008 A week visiting CESifo has flown by, filled with interesting and productive conversations, uninterrupted spells of work (what a luxury!) and all the attractions of Munich. The team here is top-rate and the atmosphere is a great balance of friendly and serious about work. A special thanks to V.Baier for her special attentions on our behalf prior to the holiday weekend - just another example of the strong sense of community that exists here. Many thanks for a great week Macke Raymond Rick Hanushek
April 26, 2008 An academic life can be marked by meeting kindred spirits, formerly separated in space but not in the life of the mind. Having first come to Munich in 1973, I found my visit to CESifo as pleasant homecoming. I had a productive series of talks with Peter Egger, and I met several visiting scholars, including Volcker Nocke and Wolgang Eggert. I chatted with colleagues at the department over at the LMU and was particularly touched when Monika Schnitzer showed me the White Rose Memorial.
The intellectual highlight of my stay was a lively seminar I gave on the "Structure of the American Economy." There is magic in walking through the English Gardens in the early morning snow and coming up to the Institute, situated on the street where Thomas Mann had lived and worked. The physical highlight of my stay was hiking through the snow with my old friend Klaus to the summit of Rotwand on a brilliant Sunday in early spring.
Many thanks, Eric
August 21, 2007 Thanks for the invitation and the hospitality! My visit to the Ifo Institute has been a very exiting experience. The center has very enthusiastic and bright researchers and I have greatly benefited from interesting discussions with them. I am especially grateful to Guido Schwerdt for sharing his summer time with me working on fertility and human capital issues. Moreover Munich is an amazing place to live and work. I hope to come back! Many thanks. Lídia Farré
August 24, 2007 This has been an incredibly rewarding visit, in many, many ways. The Ifo Institute is a wonderful place to work, full of brilliant and productive researchers, a friendly and efficient staff, and just the right level of activity for getting things done - all in the middle of the best city on this side of the Atlantic. Thanks to all - and especially Ludger Woessmann - for the invitation to come and the hospitality shown to me and my family these past three weeks. I hope to be able to come again (and soon)! Marty West Brown University (USA)
August 17, 2007 Thanks for the wonderful visit -- the time has gone too quickly! Due to its research enviroment and friendly atmosphere, the Ifo Institute is an excellent center and location for economic research. I really benefitted from the opportunity to work here. Thank You! Deborah Swenson University of California, Davis
July 20, 2007 Although the internet does not allow one to fully escape the daily routines nowadays, the past three weeks have been both refreshing and research intensive. Cooperation with colleagues at the Ifo Institute has given a boost and several research projects have made clear progress during our stay here at the Ifo. It was especially interesting to get insight in the micro data treasures of the Ifo Institute. We have initiated two new projects based upon Ifo Micro Survey Data and both appear tremendously promising. We are looking forward to our next visit and thank the Ifo for its hospitality. Best wishes, Jan-Egbert Sturm & Sarah Rupprecht KOF ETH Zurich
June 29, 2007 The past three weeks visiting CESifo have been tremendously rewarding - both professionally and personally. The Institute is just a fabulous place to work & to also learn more about some of the best research coming out of Europe. Our colleagues here (now our friends) have done a wonderful job navigating us through interesting & useful data sources, including some of the surveys conducted right her at CESifo. And while it was terrific to be productive, it was also a lot of fun to explore beautiful Munich at night - it truly is a fabulous city. We also must admit to having become incredibly fond of German food (and Munich beer!) The chance to combine two great pleasures - traveling and studying economics - is something we both appreciate. Warmly, Justin Wolfers & Betsey Stevenson University of Pennsylvania
June 9, 2007 We spent three wonderful weeks in München enjoying the hospitality of researchers and staff at CESifo. The pleasant and stimulating work environment allowed us to concentrate on our research, isolating us for a too short period from the pressing bureaucratic demands of the day-today work at our university We have also enjoyed the fantastic city of München: its friendly people and its charming atmosphere. We want to thank Thiess for inviting us and for allowing us to share good moments with Claudia, Mathias and Marlene. Thanks a lot to Katja for organizing so efficiently the details of our stay and to Christian and the rest of the staff that helped us to have a very comfortable stay. And finally, we want to thank the young researchers working just under the apartment whose research tasks have been distributed by the songs of our daughter. Best wishes, Albert Solé-Ollé & Elisabet Vildecans-Marsal Universitat De Barcelona
May 15, 2007 This has been a marvelous three-week visit to CESifo. CESifo has become one of the top "centres of excellence" in the world, and is above all a very congenial place to spend some time. The facilities are remarkable, the staff are very friendly and helpful, and there is no shortage of things to do and see. It is certainly possible to combine work in a stimulating environment like this with attractions and amenities that München has to offer. Thanks especially to Katja for her efficient and cheerful organization of the visit. I am sorry to have to leave. Robin Boadway Queen's University, Canada
April 15, 2007This has been a terrific opportunity to concentrate on my academic work, escaping from the daily pressures in Santiago de Chile. This six-week visit has also allowed me to learn more about Germany, Munich, Bavaria, and German economic debates. My research had very productive advances here.CESifo has been the best surprise: I didn´t expect so good an environment. I attended two Area-Conferences, one seminar at CES and met very interesting people including Martin Werding, Christian Holzner and Oliver Falck apart from Christian Gollier, Marco Pagano, Sijbren Cnossen and other participants in the conferences and seminars.Conversations with Hans-Werner were always a pleasure.I also want to thank Katja Gramann and Christian Holzner for all their help. Thanks again,Salvador Valdés-PrietoCatholic University of Chile
March 23, 2007 These have been three wonderful weeks of inspiration, creativity and motivation, along with great personal enjoyment - seeing friends, enjoying concerts, sampling München cuisine (and beer!). Katja took good care of me and even provided me with a bike - I became a Dutch menace to the Munich traffic. An experience without its equal! Many thanks! Sijbren Cnossen
February 27, 2007 I really had 9 very productive days at the Ifo Institute in Munich. I enjoyed my stay very much and I`m particularly grateful to Katja for all the support during my stay. The hospitality was great! I would be pleased to be reconsidered for a visit in the future. Thanks a lot, Hartmut Egger
January 24, 2007 What a great way to spend part of my sabbatical at CESifo. I very much appreciate the great hospitality and superb research environment. I am particularly grateful to Peter Egger for the invitation and the fruitful discussions we had about research. Thanks also to Katja Gramann and the CESifo staff for organising my stay and, of course, the whole visitors program. Finally a word about the guest apartment: what a nice and superbly designed place. It made me feel right at home. This combination of friendly people, great research atmosphere and beautiful accommodation is hard to beat. I hope to be back before too long.
Thanks for everything, Horst Raff
18 December 2006 My academic research has been in forecasting, and the use of survey data. Ifo seemed a natural place for a short sabbatical, away from the bustle of my life in central London. Coming to Ifo has proved a really good decision. It has been a real pleasure to mix with the community of active young researchers here, and win the not-so-young wise men (and women). Coming from the periphery of Europe, it has also been eye-opening to listen to discussions of policy issues as seen from the heart of the enlarged European community.
I look forward to a continuing relationship with my friends and - now- co-authors here in Munich. Best wishes, Roy Batchelor
August 11, 2006 Many thanks to CESifo, to Hans Werner Sinn and to all its staff, for running this visitors program! (And to the Bavarian taxpayer for allowing them to do so.) CESifo provides a perfect environment for scholars from all over the world to meet and interact. No wonder I find myself in illustrious company in this little "Gästebuch". The stay could not have been more pleasant, or more inspiring. Special thanks go to my host, Peter Egger, and of course to Katja Gramann for her smooth and professional support throughout my time. I leave the place with deep gratitude. We tend to think the world is driven by exchange, so I am wondering about the return flow. But I hope that this is the beginning of a longer-standing relationship, so there might be an intertemporal element in this exchange. Willi Kohler University of Tübingen
October 30, 2006 I have really enjoyed my visit to the Institute and I am very grateful for the invitation and support while here, especially from Katja and the staff. Thanks also to Peter for being a gracious host. My time has been productive and went by so fast. Munich is a fabulous city - I really hope to spend more time here again in the future. Keith Maskus
October 27, 2006 I spent two very pleasant and productive weeks at the Institute. I would like to thank CESifo for the invitation and everybody for having made my staying here so productive and pleasant. Thanks in particular to Thiess for having been such an excellent host and to all the staff for their support. It is a wonderful environment to make research and interact productively with people. Massimo Bordignon
August 11, 2006 Thank you very much for the kind invitation to CESifo. I enjoyed the research environment a lot and spent a very productive week here. Thanks to Peter for being such an excellent host, and thanks to the staff for making my stay so convenient. Andrea Weber
July 28, 2006 This was my first visit to CESifo and I had a wonderful time. My stay was very productive - the staff did a great job with support and the intellectual enviroment was very stimulating. Munich is a lovely city to visit as well. Eric Bond Vanderbilt University
July 5, 2006 This is my first visit to CESifo and I could not be more satisfied with it. Everything was perfectly organized, the research environment is stimulating and the city is great. I only wish I could spend more time here, but hopefully there will be a next time. Thanks to everyone I met here. Wojciech Kopczuk Columbia University
July 4, 2006 I am nearing the end of my second visit to CESifo, and like the first one, it has been marvelous. I very much appreciate the opportunity to get to know and build bans with the young researchers at CES and at the Ifo Institute, all of whom have been friendly and gracious hosts. In addition, it’s interesting to get more insight into the workings of the economics profession in Europe and into the research focus of the people I´ve met. Lastly, I absolutely love Munich as a place to spend time. The quality of life here is superb, and I´m looking forward to my next visit. Jan Brueckner UC Irvine
29 June 2006 My return visit to CESifo has been more productive than anticipated. Hans-Werner Sinn has built a marvelous research institution. And I am most grateful for this further opportunity to collaborate with Ludger Wößmann. The entire organization runs as a friendly machine designed to set up a productive environment. Of course, being in Munich at the time of the World Cup does not hurt. Thanks to all, Eric Hanushek
May 24, 2006 I would like to thank CESifo for giving me the opportunity to visit for a few weeks. It was a very productive stay: I was able to make considerable progress with papers I am working on at the moment, and found a really stimulating research environment, establishing a number of contacts with academic colleagues, which will develop into research collaborations. The administrative staff were also extremely helpful and friendly Finally, Munich is a wonderful city, and I enjoyed very much the various cultural events and museums. I look forward to future visits. Thanks again to everybody. Guglielmo Maria Caporale, Brunel University - West London
April 26, 2006 CESifo is certainly one of the best places in the world to do research in Public Finance. Many Thanks to the colleagues, research fellows and staff members, especially to Wolfgang, Christian, Katja, Peter Egger … I spent here two very positive months and I benefited from many contacts within CESifo, with other Munich fellows - Gerhard, Andreas, Marco through the network too. Also I experimented how climate may change in Munich; some weeks with much snow, some sunny days … some rain too! Many Thanks to everybody. Marcel Gérald, Catholic University of Mons (Fucam)
February 10, 2006 "Thanks… … Thiess and Hans-Werner for inviting me to CESifo and Munich. The Cesifo visitor programme is truly unique and it has been a very productive and scientifically rewarding month. … Marko, Mikael and Tobias for taking me to different parts of the Alps for some really great down-hill skiing. … Peter and Tobias for introducing me to the interesting "Weisswurst und Weissbier" - thing. (The stay has not only been scientifically rewarding …) … to all of you at Ifo, CES and CESifo for being so helpful and friendly. The stay has been really enjoyable and worthwihile in all respects!" Matz Dahlberg, Uppsala University
December 12, 2005 CESifo is my most favorite institute to visit at. It provides a unique environment for policy-oriented research. Its many scientific conferences and workshops offer a great opportunity for disseminating research ideas among scholars from all over the world. The hospitality of ist staff - academic and administrative - is remarkable. Efraim Sadka, University of Tel Aviv
December 14, 2005 CESifo is one of the most hospitable places I have been to. Staff is useful and friendly; office is quiet and well lighted; conferences add to the intellectual environment. Assaf Razin, University of Tel Aviv
Sergey M. November 25, 2005 My many thanks for the CESifo faculty and staff for their hospitality and providing me an opportunity to visit. It has been both productive and enjoyable -- a chance to talk to very active researchers about both my work and theirs. I am very grateful for the efforts they have made to visit with me and learn about common research interests. The stay has provided me an opportunity to better understand and appreciate some of the issues related to fiscal federalism in the EU. I hope and plan to incorporate this increased awareness and perhaps a few insights into my future work. Thanks again William Hoyt, University of Kentucky
October 14, 2005 There is no place like CESifo. I enjoyed my three week visit tremendously. It has been very productive! Obviously, the CESifo environment is very inspiring. The hospitality and friendliness combined with some good economics talk translates into new ideas and imaginative work. Many thanks for this good experience and best wishes for a great future of CESifo. Christian Keuschnigg, University of St. Gallen
September 09, 2005 CESifo is unique for the friendliness and effectiveness of ist staff, and you can always find peple here who are eager to discuss your research issues. It´s been impressive to watch how CESifo has grown and developed under the eladership of Hans-Werner Sinn. I have spent a very productive week here and I´m grateful for the hospitality of CESifo. Peter Birch Sørensen, University of Copenhagen
July 27, 2005 It´s always a pleasure to return to Munich and to spend stimulating and productive time here. I will depart with one research project now completed and new projects just getting underway -- so, no doubt, will have to return again to finish them (-- and start new ones). Thanks so much for your hospitality. David Wildasin, University of Kentucky
July 14, 2005 Thank you very much for your kind invitation and exception hospitality. CESifo has provided an ideal research environment. My stay here has been very productive, stimulating and enjoyable. Peter has been an exceptionally gracious host, and I very much enjoyed the many conversations about joint research interests on spatial issues. Staff has been truly helpful and friendly. Thank you again for the opportunity to visit here. With kind regards. Ingmar Prucha, University of Maryland
July 13, 2005 This is another stay at CESifo – only this time only at Ifo – come to an end. It has been both productive and enjoyable, marred only by a full week of almost non-stop rain and the London tragedy. The staff has been very helpful, and the apartment wonderful. It has been my pleasure to meet and get to know the research staff – I am impressed. Thank you for the opportunity of spending such a good week with you. Sincerely, Bob Haveman, Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison, USA
June 30, 2005 I would like to thank Prof. Hans-Werner Sinn for his kind invitation to spend time at CESifo. It has been a productive 3 weeks for me and I have completed my writing of the “Ecological status of Iraq”. I have enjoyed my change to interact with a few of the faculty, but have especially enjoyed getting to know the students in my short-course on “Wetlands, Water and Wealth”. The interest of the students in the integration of ecology and economics on global water issues grew with each lecture. I liked the questions and interaction and would highly recommend this institute for scientists worldwide as a place to come – work, learn and enjoy. My wife and daughter joined me on this trip and collectively we enjoyed our evenings and weekends touring Munich, (loved the English Garden), it’s museums and beer-gardens. We also travelled on weekends to the Bavarian Alps (wow!) and even Berlin. We will have a lifetime of fond memories of Germany, its hospitality and the great stay in Munich. A final thanks to Valerie Morfill and Deborah Murgia for all their logistic help and answers to my many questions. Curt Richardson Duke University
May 31, 2005 While I have increasingly admired over the years the contributions of CESifo to the exchange of working papers, books, and economic research from afar at my office at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, I have now had the opportunity to experience first hand the excellent research environment of CESifo. I have had an extraordinarily productive 10-day visit here, working closely on research on theoretical and empirical economic determinants of multinational firm behavior and foreign direct investment flows with my good colleague for several years, Peter Egger. I appreciate also the opportunity to present my research at the CESifo Internal Seminar. I cannot recall a week that has been more stimulating and productive. Your CESifo facility is very conducive toward doing good research. I am grateful for the excellent support of the numerous staff members, especially Deirdre Hall, Gerlinde Seifert, Deborah Murgia, and Valerie Morfill. They are not just very professional, they are wonderful individuals. Most importantly, I am very grateful to Professor Hans-Werner Sinn for his exceptional hospitality in extending an invitation to me to work at CESifo. This is a great research institution. More than just a productive 10 days, it has been a memorable visit. Many thanks, Jeffrey Bergstrand
May 19, 2005
Thank you for inviting me and thank you for the hospitality. This was a very productive research stay in an intellectually inspiring environment with a warm and personal atmosphere. It has been a great time here.
Michael Rauscher
April 22, 2005 It was a pleasure to be welcomed back to CESifo for a week´s visit. As an employee of another research institute I must admit some envy and being greatly impressed by the way CESifo runs. The administrative staff are extraordinarily helpul and competent, the engagement of the researchers in discussion is great (particularly seen at the dinner discussion following my Münchener Seminar), and the facilities and organization are terrific. I hope to be able to visit again for longer. Adam Posen
