This study is about the size and structure of the environment industry in Bavaria and includes eight steps of investigation: definition of the environmental industry, analysis of research and development activities and environmental innovations, a survey amongst the suppliers of environmental goods and services in Bavaria, analysis of the demand for environmental goods and services on the national and international level, competitiveness of the environmental industry in Bavaria, development perspectives, recommendations for the promotion of the environmental industry in Bavaria and definitions of indicators for the environmental industry.

Estimations on basis of the survey data result in 55,000 jobs in the environmental industry in Bavaria for the year 2008 and a turnover with environmental protection goods of 11,6 billion €. That corresponds to a share of approximately 20 % of German environmental employment and approximately 19 % of the turnover with environmental protection goods in whole Germany. Compared to the total employment of 4.6 million persons in Bavaria, the share of jobs in the environmental industry is about 1.2 %. The survey data result in an export quota with environmental protection goods of 18 % and a share of expenditures for research and development of 2.4 % with respect to turnover with environmental protection goods. The most important sector of the environmental industry in Bavarian is renewable energy and regenerating raw materials with 38.6 % share of total turnover, followed by waste management, recycling and secondary raw materials with a share of 33 %, waste water management with 6.8 % and energy efficiency with 5.8 %.
