This project contains a comprehensive inventory of the photovoltaik industry in Ger-many for the year 2007 and projections up to the year 2010. A special emphasis was laid on the specific meaning of this industry for East Germany.
The investigation is based on a survey of the companies along the entire value added chain of the photovoltaic industry. Not only the classical industrial photovoltaic producers from the silicon production to the module manufacturing, but also their suppliers as well as the wholesale and the handicraft sector were investigated.
Business survey on the basis of the EuPD Research data base.
In the year 2007 approximately 42,500 persons were employed in the German photovoltaic industry. Half of these jobs were created in the handicraft sector. The total turnover was almost 10 billion € in 2007 of which the photovoltaic producers earned a turnover of 5,5 billion € with exports of 2 billion €. 32.6% of the jobs in the photovoltaic industry were created in East Germany, which is clearly over-represented thereby compared with East Germany's share of 18.4% of total employment. Regarding only the photovoltaic producers the employment share of East Germany is even about 57 per cent. This demonstrates the specific importance of the photovoltaic industry for East Germany's economy.
