This study is about the size and structure of the environment industry in the Greater Munich region and includes three steps of investigation: First of all, an analysis of the demand side on the European, federal, national and regional level was carried out. Second, a survey amongst the suppliers of environmental goods and services in the Munich region generates the crucial data and information. Lastly, a qualitative analysis of environmental innovations is part of the project. Interviews with innovative firms and other experts in the field, e.g. from universities and research institutes were undertaken. Building on the results of these three steps recommendations for regional policy to promote the environmental industry are developed.
Survey with the suppliers of environmental goods and services; interviews; secondary statistics and workshop.
Survey: UMFIS and "Eco-World"; Environmental Expenditures: Statistisches Bundesamt and Bayerisches Landesamt für Statistik und Datenverarbeitung.
The market for environmental goods and services has a volume of about 183 bn Euro in the European Union and 57 bn Euro in Germany. Harmonisation of environmental law in the accession states generates a demand of around 10 bn Euro yearly. About 9.000 employees are working in the environmental industry in the Munich region earning a turnover of 1,3 billion Euro. Important environmental innovations were found in the fields of renewable energy, especially solar power, in cleaner technologies in the automobile industry and in the development of fuel cells. For the further promotion of the environmental industry the strengthening of marketing instruments and the development of a network of regional environmental companies was suggested.
