Inland waterway transportation is predestined for the shipping of bulk commodities. In addition to agricultural goods, products for the building industry as well as from the energy sector are transported. Due to structural change and some enterprise closures, the transhipment volume of the inland waterway transportation on the Main has sunk clearly.
In the study, the development of inland waterway transhipments is analysed for the individual ports. On the basis of the economic development potential of the port-specific catchment areas, the potential for inland waterway transport is estimated.
The basis for the transhipment forecast is estimates of the future volume of goods transported on the inland waterways in Bavaria. These estimates were made in previous studies on the basis of finely disagregated foreign trade and transport flows. From the analysis of the ex-post developments in the ports documented in the secondary statistics as well as the economy structure of the catchment areas, and from intensive studies of the literature and a number of expert interviews, the outlook for the individual port locations is identified.
