Given the ongoing discussion about potential means to absorb the effects caused by climate change, the production and application of goods and services for environmental and climate protection increasingly gets into the focus of economic activities. Those technologies, industries and services which can help to preserve natural resources (e. g. due to lower emission of greenhouse gases) are summarized under the term cleantech.
There are already important clusters of cleantech–industries (e.g. solar- and wind energy) in the new federal states of Germany. Partly those clusters comprise every step of the value chain from research and development over production of assets to the final use, for example in the power generation. Nevertheless, scientifically-based studies about the exist-ing cleantech–sector and analyses about its middle and long term potential are missing to this date. The current exami-nation is supposed to remedy this deficit by acquisition of information and respective structure and market analyses.
The task description for this project concentrates primarily on the structure and potential examination of the following cleantech–branches:
Part of the project is also the organisation and conduct of a one day conference, in which the study will be presented to the public and discussed by decision – makers from economy, science and politics.
The Cleantech Conference has been place on 16 October in Berlin as a part of a series of conferences on future technologies in eastern Germany conducted by the Federal Ministry for Transport, Construction and Urban Planning. The conference was focus on the development and application of promising environmental innovations in eastern Germany. The Ifo Dresden branch of the Ifo Institute was responsible for the content side of the conference preparation. Wolfgang Tiefensee was deliver words of welcome. The keynote speaker was Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri, Nobel laureate and chair of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
