With regard to the enlargement of the Eastern European Countries, the Ifo Dresden branch extended the scientific cooperation with the Institute for World Economics Budapest, Hungary. Annual meetings are organised with the financial support of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).
The previous meetings took place on 16/17 November 1999 in Budapest, on 1/2 December 2000 in Dresden and on 9/10 July 2001, again in Budapest. This conference focussed on the level of preparation reached by Hungary and the expectations of Saxony in view of EU enlargement. The members of the meeting discussed problems of the regional, structural and promotion policy.
The fourth and last Symposium took place on 5/6 July 2002 at the Ifo Institute in Dresden, and focussed on issues of industrial transformation, migration and restructuring of public services.
