With the help of the ifo business barometer for the building equipment sector the cyclical situation and further development of the industry will be analysed. For that purpose following the practice of the ifo business survey information on the present state of the companies, the business expectations and on additional factors like demand, prices, employment, exports etc. was gained with surveys by enterprises. According to the three industry stages of the building equipment sector surveys have been carried out in the manufacturing industry (heating technique, building fittings), the wholesale and larger retail trade firms. The data for the current business situation and the business expectations for the several stages were combined to form the business climate index. Additional forecasts of the economic development in Europe and Germany have been considered for the estimation of the industry’s business cycle. Special attention was laid on the changes of the private consumer expenditures, the equipment investments and the construction investments.
The survey started in October 2004, for what the associations of the building equipment sector have attracted enough participants. This report contains now an analysis of the data after more than two years. The business climate index in the whole heating industry at the end of 2009 improved considerably compared to the results of the beginning of the year. This may be especially caused by increasing private and public consumer expenditures. In the sanitary industry and in the whole air-conditioning industry a similar improvement can be asserted. Therefore, in the whole building equipment sector the business climate at the end of 2009 is much better assessed by the surveyed enterprises than in the last year. An essential contribution for the economic recovery can be seen in the public economic stimulus package.
