Economic development performance, policies and reforms are highly diverse in the five Central Asian Countries – Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgystan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. Although transport, communication, energy and water supply / distribution systems interrelate the Central Asian Countries. However, since the termination of the Soviet Union considerable disintegration of regional co-operation can be observed.
The war in Afghanistan opened the inflow of new international resources into the region. However, without improved regional co-operation these resources will hardly generate a major economic impact on the countries of the region.
The study analyses the individual country’s economic and reform performance. The factors hindering or supporting regional integration are of specific concern.
Finally the impact of the war in Afghanistan on the region as well as on the individual countries will be assessed.
