The extent of school choice, competition between schools and autonomy of local schools are central characteristics of education systems. Their effects on efficiency and equity are an important and growing field of research in the economics of education, with a vast variety of publications which focus mainly on the United States.
The research field can be separated into distinct areas which have emerged in the last decade. The first area focuses on a theory-based approach, utilizing computable general equilibrium (CGE) models to identify equity-related aspects of school choice on educational outcomes. The second area follows an empirically based approach to analyze econometrically the effects of higher levels of school competition on the efficiency of schools. This research project intends to contribute to the existing literature in two ways. First, the project aims to develop a CGE framework capable of providing simulation analyses of the distributional effects of school choice and different means intended to promote school choice on educational outcomes for a European setting. Second, the research project aims to contribute to the research on school competition and school autonomy by providing econometric analyses on the efficiency of schools and education systems using semi-parametric and non-parametric techniques on the rich international micro data of the PISA study.
The results of this research project will feed into a dissertation.
