In 2006 the Herbert Quandt Foundation initiated the interdisciplinary project “The Future of the Middle Class in Germany”. Complementing prior contributions by the sociologist Stefan Hradil (University of Mainz), the contemporary social historian Paul Nolte (Free University of Berlin) and the former head of the Ifo department Social Policy and Labour Markets, Martin Werding, since 2008 the topic is also being illuminated from a educational-economics perspective. The project is motivated by the goal of arousing increased attention in the public discussion and in the media and politics to the middle class, a group that plays a key role in every democracy.
The goal of the project is by employing an educational-economics perspective to derive policy actions on how to expand and strengthen the middle class.
The approach is empirical, and consists in a microeconomic evaluation of various educational-policy measures.
