How do competences develop over the life-cycle? What factors are essential for educational success? To what extent do institutions of the education system matter? These and other questions related to educational research will be examined and analysed by the National Educational Panel. The National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) for the Federal Republic of Germany is conducted by an interdisciplinary network of excellence headed by Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Blossfeld, Universität Bamberg.
The object of the National Educational Panel Study is to collect longitudinal data on the development of competences, educational processes and decisions as well as returns to education in a formal, non-formal and informal context over the entire life-span. The department Human Capital and Innovation at the IFO institute is a partner within the NEPS-network of excellence and responsible for the thematic area of returns to education. The NEPS-Data is going to be accessible for national and international scientist in the form of a Scientific Use Files. The NEPS data will offer a rich potential for empirical analyses for various disciplines ( e.g. demography, pedagogics, economics, psychology and sociology) interested in processes of education and training. Furthermore, it provides the fundamentals for an improvement in reporting on education and policy advice in Germany.
