The transformation of the energy markets towards a sustainable, reliable and affordable energy supply is at the centre of the current debate of energy policy. In this process, the future form of energy markets is on the one hand influenced by a number of framework conditions like climate goals, energy security and international co-ordination efforts of energy policy. On the other hand, market factors like price development and availability of fossile and non-fossile energy sources also play an essential role for the future form of energy markets. With the help of a technically grounded economic analysis of the costs of emission abatement until the year 2050 the projects examines options and measures for the transformation of the energy markets and possible consequences for the entire structure of the economy. In order to measure the suitability of the identified measures their impact on energy and economic indicators will be used.

Expert Workshop: The Future of Energy Markets - Economic Analysis, Evaluation of Potentials and Scope for Activity
10 February 2012, 10:00 – 15:30, Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie (BMWi), Berlin
The transformation of the energy industry towards a competitive, sustainable and secure energy supply is a central issue in today´s energy policy debate.
The Ifo Institute – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research at the University of Munich and the Forschungsstelle für Energiewirtschaft e.V. are conducting a study for the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) entitled “The Future of Energy Markets – Economic Analysis, Evaluation of Potentials and Scope for Activity”. It is the aim of this study to show the costs and potentials of CO2 emission abatement in Germany until the year 2050 and to analyze both the scope for activities concerning the transformation of the energy markets as well as possible consequences for the entire structure of the economy.
There will be an expert workshop which provides a forum to discuss preliminary results of this study concerning the framework conditions of the transformation process, the role of the government as well as present and future costs and potentials of CO2 emission abatement. Based on these results the workshop will also offer the opportunity to discuss future policy options – their efficiency as well as their feasibility – from a national and international perspective.
