The environmental industry is a cross section industry, which is not clearly recorded in the official statistics. At the same time high growth rates are expected for this cross section industry. The Federal Statistical Office introduced a survey of goods, construction work and services for environmental protection for the first time in 1998 which covers a wide range of the German environmental industry. But there is still lack of information on several parts of the market for environmental goods and services, especially on “efficiency technologies“. Therefore this project contains a methodology for the collection of data on the situation and development of the environmental industry and of the transformation process to a “green economy” based on a survey of the environmental industry in Germany.
