Quantification of the economic impact of the Essen trade fairs

Content:

The task of this study was to calculate the direct and indirect economic impact of the Essen trade fairs with the help of input-output tables.

Methodology:

By using input-output tables, the direct and indirect production and income effects as well as the resulting tax revenue of the various authorities (City of Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia and Germany) were estimated. For calculating the direct and indirect effects, an estimation model was developed that was primarily based on the features of the visitors and exhibitors and individual expenditures (e.g. accommodation, stand construction).

Data and other sources:

Based on surveys conducted during the project among visitors and exhibitors and selected Essen trade fairs, the total volume of visitors and exhibitors for the trade fair year 2008 was determined.

Results:

Visitors and exhibitors of Essen trade fairs spent a total of � 410 million.
About 42% of all trade expenditures were in the Essen city region.
The total aggregate output volume as a result of the direct and indirect impact of the Essen trade fairs was � 553 million, or ca. 6,250 gainfully employed persons.
With a trade-fair related output of � 553 million, the concomitant tax revenue was ca. � 107 million.
