Quantification of the economic impact of the Düsseldorf trade fairs

Methods:

By using input-output tables, the direct and indirect production and income effects as well as the resulting tax revenue of the various authorities (City of Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia and Germany) were estimated. For calculating the direct and indirect effects, an estimation model was developed that was primarily based on the features of the visitors and exhibitors and individual expenditures (e.g. accommodation, stand construction).

Data and other sources:

Based on surveys conducted during the project among visitors and exhibitors and selected Düsseldorf trade fairs, the total volume of visitors and exhibitors for a typical trade fair year was determined.

Results:

Visitors and exhibitors of Düsseldorf trade fairs spent a total of € 1.75 billion.
About 40% of all trade expenditures were in the Düsseldorf city region.
The total aggregate sales volume as a result of the direct and indirect impact of the Düsseldorf trade fairs is € 2.29 billion, or ca. 23,600 gainfully employed persons.
With a trade-fair related output of € 2.29 billion, the concomitant tax revenue is ca. € 423 million.
