Creation of a statistical Data base for the engineering industries and their sub-sectors of the New Member States (NMS) and the assessment of the competitive situation. The first area of analysis is the assessment of the performance of the manufacturers in the NMS within the EU, the second area is the competitiveness against third-countries and the third area concerns the advantages which can be derived from an intra-European division of labour.
For the creation of the Database and the subsequent analysis we will construct different groups of indicators: basic, trade, innovation, commercial, and efficiency indicators, which are derived from different data sources. The data will be provided by the associations of the industries under consideration. For the assessment of the competitive situation the analysis of innovation indicators and in particular the one of patent data is crucial. This Database will be created by the ifo Institute. It will be designed as a tool which can be applied in other studies with a focus on innovation.
