Quantification of the economic impact of the Hamburg trade fairs

Tasks:

The task of this study was to calculate the direct and indirect economic impact of the Hamburg trade fairs with the help of input-output tables.

Methods:

By using input-output tables, the direct and indirect production and income effects as well as the resulting tax revenue of the various authorities (City of Hamburg and Germany) were estimated. For calculating the direct and indirect effects, an estimation model was developed that was primarily based on the features of the visitors and exhibitors and indi-vidual expenditures (e.g. accommodation, stand construction).

Data and other sources:

Based on surveys conducted during the project among visitors and exhibitors and selected Hamburg trade fairs, the total volume of visitors and exhibitors for the trade fair year 2006 was determined.

Results:

Visitors and exhibitors of Hamburg trade fairs spent a total of � 338 million; exhibitors accounted for 61% of this amount.
About 54% of all trade expenditures were in the Hamburg city region.
The total aggregate output as a result of the direct and indirect impact of the Hamburg trade fairs is � 460 million, or ca. 5,285 gainfully employed persons. This results in a total multiplier of 2.05, i.e. an output of � 1,000 induced by trade fair spending pro-duces an additional output of � 1,050.
With a trade-fair related output of � 460 million, the concomitant tax revenue is ca. � 88 million.
