Bevorzugt behandelt werden Papiere, die sich mit den Anforderungen aus einer Gesellschaft im Wandel befassen (Familien- und Gesundheitspolitik, Arbeitsmobilität, Demografie etc.).

Es sind sowohl theoretische Arbeiten als auch empirische Studien mit unterschiedlichen regionalen Schwerpunkten willkommen. Insbesondere Nachwuchswissenschaftler werden ausdrücklich ermuntert, eine Einreichung zu erwägen.

Vor zwanzig Jahren wurde mit dem Beitritt der fünf ostdeutschen Länder zur Bundesrepublik Deutschland die Wiedervereinigung vollzogen. Mit dem grundlegenden Systemwechsel verbanden sich insbesondere in den neuen Ländern große Hoffnungen auf eine Verbesserung der Lebensverhältnisse. Weithin unterschätzt wurden dabei jedoch die Schwierigkeiten der in der DDR sozialisierten Menschen, sich in dem für sie neuen Ordnungsrahmen zurechtzufinden. Nach verbreiteter Einschätzung hat auch dies dazu beigetragen, dass die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung nicht so spannungsfrei verlief, wie es anfänglich erwartet wurde.
Vor diesem Hintergrund veranstaltet das ifo Institut in Dresden zusammen mit dem Institut für Soziologie der TU Dresden am 09. Juli 2010 eine Tagung, bei der insbesondere die soziologischen und ökonomischen Folgen der Vereinigung näher beleuchtet werden sollen.

Vor zwanzig Jahren, am 9. November 1989, fiel die Mauer und der Weg zur deutschen Einheit war bereitet. Nach der anfänglichen Euphorie erwies sich die Umgestaltung der ostdeutschen Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft weitaus schwieriger und kostenintensiver als erwartet. Nicht nur wirtschaftliche, sondern auch mentale Gräben mussten überwunden werden. Gewaltige Modernisierungsanstrengungen haben die Angleichung der Lebensverhältnisse in Ost und West deutlich vorangebracht, doch sind Einkommen und Produktivität in Ostdeutschland immer noch niedriger als in Westdeutschland. Aber auch soziokulturell und politisch bestehen markante Unterschiede zwischen den „alten“ und „neuen“ Bundesländern. Die Tagung versucht eine Bilanz der Deutschen Einheit nach 20 Jahren zu ziehen und sie im Kontext des 60. Jahrestages der Bundesrepublik Deutschland zu sehen.

On 8 November 2006, the Second Saxon Demography Conference took place at the International Congress Center of Dresden (ICD).
The expert commission on “Demographic Change in Saxony”, headed by Professor Marcel Thum presented its final report on “Recommendations for Coping with Demographic Change in the Free State of Saxony”.
In autumn 2002, Ifo Dresden and the Chair of Public Finance at the Technical University of Dresden launched the Dresden Lectures on Economic Policy. The lecture series contributes to the public discussion on current economic-policy issues by offering economic experts a platform for presenting their latest findings.
