In the official statistics there are some gaps concerning up to date investment data for Eastern Germany. The purpose of this study is to fill these gaps and to estimate invest-ment data for Eastern Germany up to the year 2004. These estimates are subdivided into two categories, investment in machinery and equipment and construction, as well as in seven economic branches. With the help of these data it should be possible to put the assessment of the most recent developments of the east German economy on a more solid base.
On the basis of the ifo investment matrices we can differentiate between a number of industries and investment categories. From that we know how much each branch of in-dustry invests in each of the categories. The data used to fill the matrix cells are taken from official statistics, enterprise reports and last not least from the ifo surveys. The consistency problem can be overcome by the matrix frame.
Official statistics, ifo investment survey, enterprise reports.
