Research Network

CESifo is a global network of more than 2000 members, each of whom is selected for their expertise and extensive experience in the CESifo research areas. Members are invited to join the network as Affiliates or Fellows after completing a period of residential research at the Center for Economic Studies or the ifo Institute.

CESifo Activities

The CESifo network stages a wide range of activities including conferences, workshops, seminars and lectures. Our working paper series offers a prominent platform for our members to disseminate their research findings, and we publish a range of supporting publications to encourage and stimulate economic debate.

CESifo Network Members

The CESifo research network formally unites residential research guests from the CES visiting program at the Center for Economic Studies (CES) at LMU Munich and the ifo Institute. The network provides a platform for these leading economists to discuss current applied and theoretical themes in economics, with an emphasis on public policy issues.

Members participate in the network as CESifo Fellows or CESifo Affiliates.

Membership to the network is by invitation only.

CESifo Fellows

CESifo Fellows are established, internationally renowned economists who are invited to join the network after completing the CES visiting program. Fellows may attend CESifo conferences, receive all CESifo publications, and benefit from additional CESifo services. Fellows contribute to network activities by organizing conferences, acting as directors for network research areas, becoming a member of the European Economic Advisory Group at CESifo, or a research professor at the ifo Institute.

CESifo Affiliates

CESifo Affiliates are promising young economists who are invited to join the network after taking part in the CES visiting program at the Center for Economic Studies (CES) at LMU Munich and the ifo Institute. Alternatively, they have been a candidate for one of the Distinguished CESifo Affiliate Awards, which is awarded to the best paper presented by a young author at the CESifo Area conferences, or have been recommended by a CESifo Fellow. Affiliates membership is initially for a period of four years. Affiliates who successfully continue their academic career after their PhD and are actively involved in CESifo activities, in particular through a good CESifo Working Paper publishing record, may be promoted to CESifo Fellow after four years.

CESifo Fellows may propose CESifo Affiliate members by writing a letter of recommendation to the president of the network. The recommendation must include a CV, and the candidate must have completed a PhD in a relevant research area and have a minimum of two publications in refereed journals.

CESifo Research Network Areas

To better meet the needs of the growing research network, a number of activities are divided into different areas. Find out more about the areas, directors and scheduled area conferences here.

CESifo Cluster

The new CESifo Cluster “Economic Research with Firm Data” strives to connect researchers working with big data from firms and share best practices on research and collaborations with firms.
