Bavarian State Office for Statistics Opens Data Research Centre at Ifo Institute
Dec 20, 2013
Centre offers further access to microdata on over 100 official statistics
The presidents of the Ifo Institute and of the Bavarian State Office for Statistics and Data Processing celebrated the opening of a new branch of the data research centre of the state statistical office at the Ifo Institute on 19 December 2013. The aim of this cooperation is to bundle the competences of both institutions in one location. This will give empirical researchers the opportunity to work at new guest researcher workplaces with microdata from over 100 official statistics. This should make it easier for Ifo researchers in particular to access the comprehensive data offering of the Office for Statistics and Data Processing.
The new branch of the data research centre of the Bavarian State Office for Statistics and Data Processing will be linked to the Economics & Business Data Center (EBDC), which is run by the Ifo Institute in conjunction with the economics and business administration faculties of the Ludwig Maximilian University. The EBDC is a central point of contact and coordination for scientific data banks on companies and provides researchers with data sets on German companies that can be used for empirical research, including the anonymous survey data of the Ifo Institute and balance sheet data from external data sources. The data research centre of the Offices for Statistics, in which the Bavarian State Office for Statistics and Data Processing is involved, has the task of facilitating access to official microdata. In addition to a large number of economic and social statistics, such data also includes, for example, statistics from the areas of taxes and finance, as well as education and health. In total the research centre currently offers micro data from over 100 official statistics, which can be used for the purposes of scientific research in compliance with the laws on statistical confidentiality.
Thanks to the cooperation between the Ifo Institute and the Bavarian State Office for Statistics and Data Processing, all interested researchers can now access (and evaluate for project-specific purposes) both the EBDC’s data on companies and the official microdata of the data research centre of the Länder Offices for Statistics under one roof.
Researchers interested in using official microdata can find contact information on the staff of the data research centre of the Bavarian State Office for Statistics and Data Processing, as well as information on conditions of use, forms of access and the current data offering at www.statistik.bayern.de/fdz.
Comments by the presidents on the new branch of the data research centre:
Prof. Hans-Werner Sinn, President of the Ifo Institute:
“I am delighted that the new branch offers guest researchers workplaces at the data research centre of the Länder Offices for Statistics in the Ifo Institute. Access to both Ifo survey data, as well as official microdata, is invaluable to all researchers working empirically.”
Karlheinz Anding, President of the Bavarian State Office for Statistics and Data Processing:
“The new branch of the data research centre of the Bavarian State Office for Statistics and Data Processing creates further access to official microdata, in compliance with official data confidentiality laws, of course. For researchers at the Ifo Institute, in particular, this offers more convenient and timely access to the data research centre‘s data offering. The Bavarian State Office for Statistics and Data Processing is thus actively contributing to the cooperation between academia and the Offices for Statistics”.
