"The Euro Trap. On Bursting Bubbles, Budgets, and Beliefs" by Hans-Werner Sinn

  • Is it right for the European Central Bank (ECB) to purchase large quantities of toxic assets from commercial banks?
  • Can this revive the euro area’s flagging economy and address Southern Europe’s lack of competitiveness? Do such purchases lie within the ECB’s mandate?
  • Does deflation in Southern Europe represent a danger or a blessing?
  • And doesn’t the bail-out architecture pose a threat to the market economy and democracy?

These are just some of the questions discussed by Ifo President Hans-Werner Sinn in his new book “The Euro Trap. On Bursting Bubbles, Budgets, and Beliefs”, published by Oxford University Press.

The book will be presented in German by Prof. Jürgen Stark, former Chief Economist at the ECB.
