Professor Hans-Werner Sinn is one of Germany’s most influential economists. He is President of the Ifo Institute and Professor of Economics and Public Finance at the University of Munich. As President of a Leibniz Association institute, both he and the institute he heads are responsible for identifying key policy issues and providing the public with relevant scientifically-based information, with the goal of contributing to sound policy-making and bringing objectivity to public discussion. On behalf of the Ifo Institute, Professor Sinn has made many important contributions to public debate over questions ranging from the national, such as the malaise affecting Germany during its long slump, through pan-European ones such as the Target balances and the euro crisis, to global ones such as the financial crisis and the climate-influencing green paradox.

"Gefangen im Euro" ("Trapped in the Euro")

"Gefangen im Euro" ("Trapped in the Euro")

The financial markets have finally calmed down because Europe’s taxpayers have accepted liability for the investment risks in southern Europe. Yet the crisis in the real economy smoulders on due to the lack of any improvement in the competitiveness of southern European countries. With his usual clarity Ifo President Hans-Werner Sinn analyses the problems with the euro and proposes measures to overcome them. To save the European unification project, Sinn argues in favour of haircuts, temporary exits from the Eurozone, new rules for the European Central Bank and the set-up of a European Confederation based on the model of Switzerland. read on "Gefangen im Euro" ("Trapped in the Euro")

"Die Target-Falle" ("The Target Trap")

"Die Target-Falle" ("The Target Trap")

In January 2002 freshly minted euro notes were distributed, amidst high hopes, among the members of the newly created Eurozone. Today, just ten years later, the euro project is in the throes of a major crisis. What began as a European peace project has led to dispute and discontent that can only be held in check by heavy borrowing from the savings accounts of citizens of the Eurozone’s core countries. read on "Die Target-Falle" ("The Target Trap")

Books on the Green Paradox

Books on the Green Paradox

Astutely and with convincing arguments, Hans-Werner Sinn describes the “Green paradox”. Viewing the climate problem as an economist, the best-selling author examines the blind spots in an important debate.
The book "Das grüne Paradoxon. Plädoyer für eine illusionsfreie Klimapolitik" was published 2008 (Econ), an updated version 2012 (Ullstein, paperback).
An englisch version appeared in 2012 (MIT Press): "The Green Paradox. A Supply-Side Approach to Global Warming". read on Books on the Green Paradox
