Regional evaluation for Saxony of the Ifo Business Survey in March 2017
Saxon Economy Goes into Spring Brimming with Optimism
The business climate indicator for trade and industry in the Free State of Saxony rose sharply in March. Saxon companies were even more satisfied than last month with their already good current business situation. Business expectations on the part of manufacturers and wholesalers also contributed to the exceptionally optimistic six-month business outlook. The business climate indices for eastern Germany and Germany as a whole also rose in March 2017.

The Ifo Business Climate Index is based on feedback from around 500 companies from manufacturing, construction, wholesaling and retailing. Companies are asked to assess their current business situation and their six-month business outlook. They can describe their current situation as “good”, “satisfactory” or “bad” and their six-month business outlook as “more favourable”, “unchanged” or “less favourable”. The balance value of the current business situation is the difference between the percentage of “good” and “bad” responses; while the balance value of the expectations is the difference between the percentage of “more favourable” and “less favourable” responses. The business climate is a transformed mean of the balances of the current business situation and expectations. The transformed balances are respectively normalised to the average of 2005 to calculate the index values.
