Ifo Business Climate Index for Saxony Declines Again
The Ifo Business Climate for trade and industry in the Free State of Saxony cooled down marginally in February. This was due to poorer business expectations on the part of survey participants. The business situation, by contrast, improved slightly. In Eastern Germany the business climate index also edged downwards, while it rose somewhat in Germany overall.

The Ifo Business Climate Index is based on feedback from around 500 companies from manufacturing, construction, wholesaling and retailing. Companies are asked to assess their current business situation and their six-month business outlook. They can describe their current situation as “good”, “satisfactory” or “bad” and their six-month business outlook as “more favourable”, “unchanged” or “less favourable”. The balance value of the current business situation is the difference between the percentage of “good” and “bad” responses; while the balance value of the expectations is the difference between the percentage of “more favourable” and “less favourable” responses. The business climate is a transformed mean of the balances of the current business situation and expectations. The transformed balances are respectively normalised to the average of 2005 to calculate the index values.
