German Companies’ Willingness to Recruit Wanes Slightly

Mar 29, 2017

German companies’ willingness to recruit waned slightly this month, but remains at a very high level. The Ifo Employment Barometer dropped to 109.4 points in March from 110.6 points last month. Last year’s big recruitment drive appears to be slowing down slightly.

Willingness to recruit weakened in all four branches. After an almost uninterrupted rise in recent months, the pace of recruiting slowed somewhat in manufacturing. The same applies to the construction sector. In distribution and the service sector the employment barometer dropped significantly. Companies in both sectors are nevertheless still hiring new staff.

Legend

The Ifo Employment Barometer is based on ca. 9,500 monthly responses from businesses in manufacturing, construction, wholesaling, retailing and the services sector. The companies are asked to report on their employment plans for the coming three months. They can describe their plans for the number of employees for the coming six months as “increasing”, “stable”, or “decreasing”. The balance value of the plans is the difference in the percentage shares of the responses “increasing” and “decreasing”. To calculate the index value the balances are normed to the average for the year 2005.

The Ifo Employment Barometer is calculated exclusively for the Handelsblatt.
