The journal is published in German language.

Survey Series

In order to increase the visibility of solo self-employed and micro enterprises, the ifo Institute has been publishing a new indicator since December 2021: the Jimdo-ifo Business Climate Index for the Self-Employed, which is based on the ifo Business Surveys. Similar to the overall index, all sectors are taken into account, with a focus on the service sector. To attract new participants, we are working on this business climate index in cooperation with Jimdo, a provider of online tools for solo self-employed and small businesses, and the Association of Founders and Self-Employed People of Germany (VGSD e.V.).

The GAME-LIGHTS database is a grid cell-level database covering a rich collection of variables for all counties worldwide from 1992 to 2013. The dataset collects information on meteorological events from primary information and translates them into weather anomalies on a 0.5° x 0.5° cell-level basis. GAME-LIGHTS covers storms, extreme temperature events, torrential rain and droughts on a yearly basis. It also adds information on night-time light emissions data and population data on the grid cell level.

The data provide a unique dataset for economic analysis as it contains variation which is presumably exogenous to economic outcomes. The service of GAME-LIGHTS is to provide the data in a structured way.

We keep moving – in 2022, a lot happened at the ifo Institute. Our data center is now independent, our researchers received awards, they helped shape debates through offices, and some of our committees were re-staffed. And the Gender Task Force also developed ideas that are already having an impact.

What does it take to turn a disparate group of economics scholars paying a scholarly visit to Munich, then a backwater in economics, into one of the world’s foremost research networks in the field? Two things: vision, and Hans-Werner Sinn. Long Germany’s most influential economist, HWS built up the network to now more than 2,000 prominent members spread around five continents, created the highly successful CESifo Working Paper series, with now some 11,000 papers published, and turned Munich into a hotbed of economic research, with more than 800 economics events so far. And all of that in barely 25 years.

On our Silver Jubilee, we are proudly looking back and, under the steady hand of Clemens Fuest, HWS's hand-picked successor, also proudly looking ahead, to the next 25 years—and beyond.

The public session of the ifo Annual Meeting is dedicated to a current economic policy topic and brings together science, business and politics.

With its business surveys the ifo Institute collects data that are of great interest for empirical economic research both in Germany and abroad. Some long time-series are provided in Excel format for facilitating further processing by the user.

The strength of the ifo Institute's scientific achievements is also reflected in its success in the scientific competition for research grants. The research grants acquired in the scientific competition have a double effect for the ifo Institute: on the one hand, they increase the scope for research, and on the other hand, they make it possible to work on fundamental policy-oriented issues and thus improve the basis for policy advice by the ifo Institute.
